“Happy Thanksgiving!”
It’s wonderful to hear, gratifying to say, and the time with loved ones that accompanies the greeting is a treasure. Here at Root & Vine, we wish we could give you a big hug and express our profound gratitude for journeying with us, dreaming with us, reading with us, and learning with us. But since we’re here on this side of the internet, and you’re all the way over there, we’re sharing just a few of the things we are most thankful for… in addition to you, our readers, of course!
The kindness of others.
Everyone goes through rough patches, questions in faith, hard times with friends. One of the things we’re most thankful for this year are people that have reached out proactively to support and show their love. One inspiring story about the kindness of others through creativity can be read here.
Sunshine.
It sounds simple, yes. But the way that Creation has been made for us, to grow our food, warm our air and water, its honestly amazing. And not only its functional help, but this year it has boosted our spirits when reading Remarkably Bright Creatures and Seedtime and Harvest.
Changing Seasons.
The first buds on trees, the first snow, leaves falling in autumn. The changing seasons both literally and figuratively leads us into new experiences. One of our best and most thoughtful reflections on this can be found here, at Reasons to Hope. We hope you love it too.
Practical Ways to Care for Creation.
Whether its looking at holidays as opportunities to love people and love Creation, or cooking with purpose, we’re grateful for all the ways that our writers and readers have suggested loving God’s good gift to us a little better. Shopping guides, earth-friendly and community-building meals, and even ways to help save our churches funds and also support the planet and the community.
Shopping with a Purpose.
We love entrepreneurs who aren’t only doing well, but also doing good. When stores and restaurants like Marrow in Detroit are feeding customers, but doing so intentionally and with the purpose of also supporting local and regional agriculture and farmers, with a focus on sustainable practices, we all win, not just the business. We are so thankful for companies like Plantd and Heirloom who have their eyes on the future!
Creation Care Warriors.
Most of us are doing what we can to support Creation. But life is busy, and we all have different callings. This is just one reason we’re so grateful for Creation Care warriors like Katharine Hayhoe, Interfaith Power and Light and United Churches of Christ. These good folks are people that have dedicated their God-given skills, sometimes their careers, and many times their faith, so honoring God’s gift of Creation to us, and making sure it’s healthy for many generations to come.
